Located in downtown Atlanta on the east side of the Georgia Tech campus, Bobby Dodd Stadium is the oldest on campus stadium in the FBS. Home of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets for over a century, Bobby Dodd Stadium was originally known as Grant Field and opened in 1913. Built at a cost of $15,000, the stadium originally had a capacity of 5,600, with seating located on what is now the west side of the stadium. The first of several additions came in 1924 and 1925 when stands were constructed on the east and south sides, increasing the capacity to 30,000. By the 1947 season, the original west stands had been rebuilt and a press box was added, increasing the capacity to 40,000. The north stands were constructed in 1958, followed by a second deck on the east side in 1962. By 1967, the west side had been expanded, boosting the seating capacity to 58,121.
In 1971, Georgia Tech replaced the grass playing field with Astroturf. Throughout the 1980s, fans attending games at the stadium saw several changes. In 1982, new scoreboards were installed, and in 1985, the south stands were demolished and replaced with the Wardlow Center, which houses the athletic department. The demolition of the south stands reduced the seating capacity to 46,000. In April 1988, Georgia Tech honored former football coach Bobby Dodd by renaming Grant Field Bobby Dodd Stadium. During the 1990s, 32 new luxury suites and a new press box were added, while the Astroturf was removed and replaced with natural grass.
Perhaps the most significant renovation and expansion of Bobby Dodd Stadium came before the 2003 season. Georgia Tech spent $75 million to renovate and expand the stadium, increasing the seating capacity to 55,000. The project included a new two tier grandstand on the north end, providing 15,000 seats along with luxury suites, offices and locker rooms. The east stands were also rebuilt and now include 20 executive suites. Additional seating was added in the south end zone in front of the Wardlow Building. A new video scoreboard and ribbon boards were installed at Bobby Dodd Stadium in 2009. Prior to the start of the 2020 season, the natural grass playing field was replaced with FieldTurf. The seating capacity decreased to just below 52,000 when the Fanning Student Athletic Center was built in the north end zone in 2024. Following the 2026 season, Bobby Dodd Stadium will undergo a massive $500 million renovation. The project includes replacing the existing bleachers with chairback seats, updated luxury suites and new videoboards.
