Some of the most breathtaking views at
any college football stadium may be found at LaVell Edwards Stadium,
with the Rocky Mountains surrounding the stadium. The history of the
stadium dates back to the early 1960s when a new stadium was
constructed to replace the old 5,000 Cougar Stadium. Construction
began in October 1963 and was completed the following fall. It was
originally known as Cougar Stadium and had a seating capacity of
28,000 in 1964. Two decades passed before any changes were made at the
stadium.
In 1982,
a huge expansion increased the seating capacity to 65,000. Stands were constructed on the north
and south sides of the stadium, the track was removed and the field
was lowered; allowing for additional seating to be built. Before the
1996 season, a new video/scoreboard was installed on the south side of
the stadium. The stadium was renamed after former Cougars Coach, LaVell Edwards, after the 2000 season.
A new HD video/scoreboard was installed on the north side of
LaVell Edwards Stadium in 2008. Today the stadium
consists of a single tier box bowl with a four level press box on the
west side containing 42 luxury suites.
