MOUNTAIN AMERICA STADIUM

Sun Devil Stadium, home of the Arizona State Sun Devils

Tempe, AZ

Located on the campus of Arizona State University, Mountain America Stadium has been the home of the ASU Sun Devils since 1958. In the mid 1950s, Arizona State University decided to construct a stadium for its football program. The stadium was constructed between two small mountains and was completed in time for the start of the 1958 season. Named after the team the stadium had a seating capacity of 30,000 when it opened on October 4, 1958 as Arizona State beat West Texas State. For over six decades the stadium was known as Sun Devil Stadium. In August 2023, Arizona State sold the naming rights to Mountain America Credit Union for 15 years. The stadium was renamed Mountain America Stadium.

Since its opening there have been many additions to Mountain America Stadium. Beginning in 1976, the capacity was increased to over 57,000. The following year the capacity was increased to over 70,000 when the upper deck was completed.

After the 1987 NFL season, the St. Louis Cardinals moved to Arizona and Mountain America Stadium. Prior to the team’s first season at Sun Devil Stadium, more renovations were completed at the stadium. Over 1,000 seats were added, along with an athletic complex on the south end of the stadium, a scoreboard and four video boards. In 1989, a three-story, 60,000 square-foot building was constructed atop the upper deck on the west side, that contains two 30-suite levels, a modern press box, and eight additional private suites. This gave Mountain America Stadium a seating capacity of over 73,000 with the main grandstand in the shape of a horseshoe.  Fans who attend games at Mountain America Stadium receive outstanding views of the surrounding area. The Arizona Cardinals moved from Mountain America Stadium and to University of Phoenix Stadium after the 2005 season. In the past the stadium was home of the Fiesta Bowl and was the site of Super Bowl XXX in 1996.

In April 2012 Arizona State unveiled plans renovate and change the game day experience at Mountain America Stadium. This $268 million project is being completed in four phases from 2014 to 2018. The project reduced the overall seating capacity to 53,599 included the addition of a terrace pavilion on the north plaza, a double-sided video/scoreboard in the north end zone, a new student section in the south end zone, and upgrades to the seating areas, concessions, restrooms and the sound system. This project not only changed the appearance of Mountain America Stadium, but created an amazing new atmosphere on gamedays. Open concourses allow for easy movement around the facility and panoramic views can be enjoyed of the Valley or fans can catch a breeze while watching the action on the field.
